The Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for the recruitment of candidates for various posts in different government offices and ministries in India. The CHSL exam is conducted in three stages - Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III. The syllabus for each stage is as follows:

Tier I The Tier I exam is a computer-based examination and consists of four sections:

  1. General Intelligence: This section includes questions on both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. It may include questions on analogies, classification, series, coding-decoding, puzzles, etc.

  2. English Language: This section includes questions on grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, reading comprehension, etc.

  3. Quantitative Aptitude: This section includes questions on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, etc.

  4. General Awareness: This section includes questions on current affairs, history, geography, economics, polity, etc.

  1. Quantitative Aptitude:
  • Arithmetic: Number Systems, Computation of Whole Numbers, Decimals and Fractions, Relationship between numbers
  • Fundamental arithmetical operations: Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time and work
  • Algebra: Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.
  • Geometry: Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts: Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only)
  • Statistical Charts: Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar-diagram, Pie-chart

Tier II The Tier II exam is a descriptive type test and consists of two sections:

  1. Essay Writing: This section tests the writing skills of the candidates. They are required to write an essay on a given topic.

  2. Letter/Application Writing: This section tests the candidate's ability to write formal letters and applications.
